IMPORTANT: Microsoft-Released HotFix for Serious Bug in Update for Office 2007 Is Now Incorporated in Cumulative Update
THE PROBLEM
On June 8, Microsoft released Security Update KB969604 for Office 2007. Shortly thereafter, it was reported that the update causes "Document Variables" to become corrupted when saving in .docx format.
WHO IS AFFECTED?
If you are using Word 2007 with Best Authority and have installed the Security Update KB969604 for Office 2007, then you will be affected.
THE RESOLUTION
On July 21, Microsoft released a hotfix package that includes a fix for the bug introduced in KB969604. This package also includes a number of fixes for other problems. Microsoft has since incorporated this hotfix in KB974561 as part of the November 2009 cumulative updates.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
We are recommending that all users of Word 2007 who have installed KB969604 install the optional update KB974561 and test it in your environment. Levit & James has tested this update and certifies that it resolves the Document Variable problem for Best Authority running in Word 2007 introduced by the KB969604 update.
Please note that L&J has not tested the other features of the update and can verify neither their effectiveness nor their reliability.
HOW TO GET THE UPDATE PACKAGE
Visit the Microsoft site at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974561 or run "Check for updates" within MS Word to get the update via Microsoft Update. PLEASE NOTE that Microsoft Update refers to this as an "optional" software update!
